Nurturing Life and Love: Erin and Stefan's Journey of Love in Top Boy
Erin's candid revelation about contraception and the potential consequences of unprotected intimacy is a powerful reminder of the responsibilities that come with romantic relationships.
Though the UK series Top Boy is known for its raw portrayal of urban life, drug dealing, and gruesome death, the series also delves into the complexities of relationships and the challenges of growing up in a world filled with uncertainties.
Season 5, Episodes 3 and 4 of the series provide an in-depth insight into the coming-of-age narrative and the romantic relationship between Erin (Savannah Graham) and Stefan (Araloyin Oshunremi). Erin's confidence in initiating a romantic relationship with her best friend, Stefan, while also addressing critical themes of sexual health, intimacy, and responsible decision-making is well thought out before the series wraps up.
After getting a hot latte, Stefan and Erin walk down the street and stand on a wooden bridge. In a candid exchange, Erin's laughter and playful banter with Stefan set the stage for an exploration of their evolving dynamic. Her insistence on the declaration of love before admitting affection reveals a sense of self-assuredness, indicating Erin's willingness to take charge in matters of the heart.
As Stefan expresses his feelings, Erin's chuckle and smile reflect a shared understanding, underscoring the strength of their bond. Their tentative plans to spend time together demonstrate mutual respect for boundaries, a key component in any healthy relationship.
"Erin, do you like me?" Stefan gently asks.
Erin chuckles and looks at Stefan. "That's not how this goes, Stef," she replies. "You have to tell me if you love me first."
Stefan professes his love for her and invites her to his house. Erin agrees to visit Stefan but tells him that they won't do anything. Stefan timidly says he wasn't talking about doing something. Erin tells Stefan that they need to get tested before doing anything. Confused, Stefan asks her what they are getting tested for. "For STDs and that," Erin replies.
Stefan isn't sure about the need to get tested before having sex. But Erin isn't ready to have sex unless both of them are tested for STDs. Her unwavering commitment to their well-being is evident when she broaches the topic and goes ahead to educate Stefan on the importance of safeguarding oneself before engaging in a sexual relationship. Her frankness in discussing the necessity of sexual health precautions showcases a maturity beyond her years. "You have to be proper about this stuff, Stef," she asserts, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding their physical health. "And I need to go on the pill straight away if we need to do anything."
Erin's candid revelation about contraception and the potential consequences of unprotected intimacy is a powerful reminder of the responsibilities that come with romantic relationships. Even if Stefan is ignorant of the implications of unprotected sexual intimacy, Erin's words serve as a beacon of guidance for Stefan, urging him to approach love with respect and care.
The conversation surrounding intimacy is unflinchingly honest. Erin acknowledges the unspoken realities of romantic relationships, shedding light on the societal discomfort that often shrouds these discussions. "Everyone knows what is eventually gonna happen," she admits, challenging the embarrassment that too often hinders open conversations about sex. Erin tells Stefan that she thinks he shouldn't waste his time but he should be grown (up) about it.
Stefan is shocked by Erin's knowledge about intimate affairs, he asks her if she has done it before. Erin giggles before replying that she hasn't and asks Stefan who he thinks she is. "Have you done it?” she asks.
Stefan slowly shakes his head, "No," he says, calmly.
"I mean, there is nothing to be scared about, right?" Erin declares, assuring Stefan that it's going to be safe. "Everyone does it." Erin takes Stefan to a clinic and they both get tested for STDs.
Erin’s insistence on maturity and growth in matters of the heart is a call to action, encouraging Stefan to approach their budding romance with a sense of responsibility and understanding. The exchange showcases Erin's confidence and her commitment to ensuring a healthy foundation for their relationship.
It's not that Stefan is ignorant about the danger of unprotected sex. Before his demise, Stefan's oldest brother Jamie (Michael Ward) used to advise Stefan and his older brother Aaron (Hope Ikpoju Jr.) to be sensible and safe. So, before Stefan goes to Erin's home for their first sexual experience, he stops by a park, where he, Jamie, and Aaron used to commemorate and communicate with their deceased parents to tell Jamie that "it's that time".
We see Erin making her bed, preparing for Stefan to visit. When Stefan rings the doorbell, she sighs and adjusts her tank top before answering the door. She hugs Stefan, takes her to her room, and they lie on the bed. She tells him that she received a message from the clinic for the test and she is fine. She asks Stefan if he received any message, and he says he did. Erin does not trust boys, because, according to her mom, men will do anything to get in women's panties. She is ready to have sex but she isn't ready to risk her health—physical or mental, for it. She demands to see the message before she sleeps with Stefan. What a smart girl!
Erin's mother Mandy (Natalie Bianaca Athanasiou aka No-Lay), a figure of wisdom and guidance, plays a crucial role in reinforcing the themes explored in the episode. Her direct inquiry about Erin's relationship status with Stefan humorously underscores her protective nature as a parent. Her advice to the young couple is a perfect motherly love and a blend of caution and empowerment. Encouraging them to prioritize kindness, respect, and protection of their feelings, Mandy imparts invaluable lessons on navigating the complexities of love. Her warnings about the perils of sharing intimate images and the enduring nature of the internet serve as a stark reminder of the world they inhabit.
Top Boy's Season 5 Episodes 3 and 4 offer a compelling portrayal of Erin's journey in love, as she confidently navigates the intricacies of romantic relationships. Through candid conversations, responsible decision-making, and the guidance of trusted figures like her mother, Erin empowers both herself and Stefan to embark on their shared journey with wisdom and maturity. These episodes serve as a testament to the importance of open communication, self-respect, and mutual understanding in the realm of love and intimacy.
